“Strengthening and Empowering Radiotherapy Service for Cancer Treatment in Asia”

Cancer is one of non-communicable disease with the incidence number of morbidity and mortality increases worldwide. Cancer creates a lot of problem that would not only decrease the life quality of the subjects but also their families. It might as well impact the national economics. Therefore we as oncologists believe that we could do something to lighten up their burden by providing the right treatment and management for cancers patients in our region.

Asia is the major part of the global economy, It consists of about 50 countries with its populations comprise more than 50% of the world population and it should become the strength to every organization stands in it. On the other side, Asia is also the most heterogeneous region, where we can find not only a country with a very high income but also countries with very low income. In regards to radiotherapy, the Asian region has also the widest variability access to radiation treatment. Some has met or even achieve beyond the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) standard, and some even still very far from reaching it.

FARO (Federation of Asian Organizations for Radiation Oncology) was established in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2014 when a group of professional Oncologists in Asia wanted to dedicate themselves to improve the basic level of radiotherapy for the benefit of patients in their regions. It is a non-profit and scientific organization which is intended to function as a federation of radiation oncology societies in Asia-Pacific and aims to foster the role of radiation oncology to improve the basic level of radiotherapy for the benefit of the patients in the Asia-Pacific region. FARO supports all radiation oncologist especially those in Asia Pacific regions in their daily practice.

With 12 participating radiation oncology societies from 12 nations, namely : Indonesian Radiation Oncology Society (IROS), Bangladesh Society of Radiation Oncologists (BSRO), Chinese Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (CSTRO), Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI), Japanese Society for Radiation Oncology (JASTRO), Korean Society for Radiation Oncology (KOSRO), Malaysian Oncological Society (MOS), Philippine Radiation Oncology Society (PROS), Singapore Radiological Society (SRS), Sri Lanka College of Oncologists (SLCO), Thai Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (THASTRO), Radiological Society of Pakistan (RSP) with the same mission, which is : to promote innovation, research, and dissemination of science and technology through its congresses, special meetings, educational courses and publications. Total population from these nations comprises two third of the world population, making FARO one of the largest radiation oncology society federation in the world.

To carry out its mission, it is necessary to hold scientific conference as a medium to encourage exchange of knowledge between society members in order to strengthen, improve, professionalize, and standardize knowledge and practice in radiation oncology services and its associated profession, tailored for the Asia Pacific countries with its own specific challenges, conditions and characteristics.

This is the first scientific congress organized by FARO, and will be a perfect opportunity for young oncologists, fellows, trainees, and students, as well as senior oncologist who wish to increase and update their knowledge in oncology, especially in Asia Pacific region. Hopefully, this congress will be held annually and become internationally recognized as provider of high quality education.
